Students living in Anderson Springs, Bees Creek (including The Forest), The Woods, Steep Bank West and Waters Lake will attend highly acclaimed Elkins High School due to rezoning changes that become effective in August 2007. Elkins High School students performed well among their district and state peers on the demanding 2005-2006 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test.
Requiring thorough analysis and higher-order thinking skills, TAKS tests high school students in reading/language arts, math, social studies and science. In reading, 93 percent of students passed the test, while 95 percent of those taking the test passed the social studies portion of the test. Eighty-one percent of students passed the science portion of TAKS and 75 percent passed the math TAKS test. Thirty-one percent of those taking the test scored well enough to earn commendations in reading, while twenty-three percent were commended for their math test scores. In social studies, 46 percent of the students earned commended status and 21 percent of students received science commendations.
Elkins also compares well with peer campuses and is ranked 12th of 97 public high schools in the Houston area and third in Fort Bend by Children at Risk, a local research and advocacy group. Judging criteria included graduation rates and students’ scores on SAT college entrance exams, Advanced Placement tests and TAKS tests.
Open since 1992, Elkins boasts an active parent volunteer program and provides strong academics with more than 200 possible course selections including Gifted and Talented programs, honors programs, 18 advanced placement (AP) courses, special education instruction and an extensive vocational-technical curriculum.
